About Male Hair Loss
Baldness in men is related to genes and male sex hormones. It is usually manifested by a receding hairline and thinning hair on the crown of the head. The hair loss may also be due to other causes. This may be the case if the hair loss occurs in patches, if you lose a lot of hair, if your hair breaks or if you have hair loss along with redness, scaling, pus or pain.
Symptoms
The typical pattern of male pattern hair loss begins at the hairline. The hairline gradually shifts back (recedes) and forms an “M” shape. Eventually, the hair becomes finer, shorter and thinner, forming a U-shaped (or horseshoe-shaped) hair pattern on the sides of the head.
About Female Hair Loss
The reason for the female baldness is not yet fully understood, but could be related:
- Ageing
- Changes in androgen levels (hormones that can stimulate male characteristics).
- Male or female pattern baldness in the family
- Heavy blood loss during menstruation
- Certain medications, such as oestrogenic oral contraceptives
Symptoms
Female hair thinning differs from male hair loss. In female hair loss:
- The hair thins mainly at the top and the crown of the scalp. It usually starts with a widening in the middle of the hair. This pattern of hair loss is known as Christmas tree pattern.
- The front hairline is not affected, apart from the normal regression that occurs in everyone over time.
- Hair loss rarely progresses to complete or almost complete baldness, as it can in men.
